Our mission

The mission of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program is to provide support and instruction in the English language, American culture, and academic and cognitive areas to English Language Learners (ELLs) which will enable them to become successful in the mainstream classroom, the schools, and the community.

The ESOL program goals are:
1.    To develop competency in comprehending oral and written English and in speaking and writing English
2.    To develop learning strategies
3.    To integrate language, cognitive, and academic instruction to enable students to develop English language proficiency and content area skills
4.    To orient students and parents to American culture, so that they may participate in school and community life
5.    To ensure that students retain pride in their culture
6.    To ensure that all staff in the district assume responsibility for the acculturation and instruction of ESL students

ESOL Approach
1. In the ESL classroom and in the Reading, Language Arts, and English classrooms, Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) as well as Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) will be developed.  Students will receive instruction in: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
2. ELLs will participate in the mainstream education content classes with adaptations and modifications made by the mainstream teacher and the ESL teacher acting as a resource.
